Basse-Terre adalah sebuah pulau di Guadeloupe dengan penduduk berjumlah 175.000 jiwa.

Cuaca

Meski mengukur intensitas curah hujan dalam waktu singkat relatif sulit, Guinness World Records 2005 mencatat Basse-Terre sebagai daerah dengan curah hujan tertinggi dalam waktu singkat menurut metode modern. Pada 26 November 1970, curah hujan sebesar 38 mm berlangsung selama satu menit di pulau ini.

Geografi

La Grande Soufrière, gunung tertinggi di kepulauan Antillen Kecil, berada di Basse-Terre. Gunung berapi ini memiliki ketinggian 1.467 m.

Kota

Basse-Terre juga sebuah préfecture (ibu kota administratif) di région d'outre-mer Guadeloupe. Daerah perkotaannya memiliki populasi 44.864 jiwa (1999), 12.410 di antaranya tinggal di kota (commune) Basse-Terre.

Kota Basse-Terre didirikan pada 1643 di daerah pegunungan. Kota ini pernah hancur beberapa kali akibat Peperangan Indian-Prancis.
