Bakelit adalah plastik pertama yang terbuat dari komponen sintetis. Ini adalah resin fenol formaldehida termoseting, terbentuk dari reaksi kondensasi fenol dengan formaldehida. Ini dikembangkan oleh ahli kimia Belgia-Amerika Leo Baekeland di Yonkers, New York, pada tahun 1907.

Bakelite dipatenkan pada tanggal 7 Desember 1909. Penciptaan plastik sintetis revolusioner karena sifat nonkonduktivitas listrik dan tahan panasnya pada isolator listrik, selubung radio dan telepon, dan beragam produk seperti peralatan dapur, perhiasan, batang pipa, mainan anak-anak, dan senjata api.

Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, daya tarik "retro" dari produk Bakelite lama telah membuatnya dapat dikoleksi.[3]
