Babae

Babae atau Baebae merupakan makanan khas dari Nias Selatan. Masyarakat di Desa Hilisataro, Kecamatan Toma, Kabupaten Nias Selatan, kembali melestarikan makanan tradisional ini.[1] Pada zaman dahulu, babae hanya dapat disuguhkan, antara lain, di pesta adat, upacara kelahiran anak, acara pertunangan, serta pernikahan. Konon babae adalah makanan yang hanya disantap oleh keluarga bangsawan dan tidak sembarangan disantap oleh masyarakat umum.

Nama babae tidak asing lagi bagi masyarakat Kabupaten Nias Selatan. Kuliner tradisional ini terbuat dari sejenis kacang-kacangan atau masyarakat setempat menyebutnya fakhe niha. Pembuatan babae mempunyai banyak versi yang berbeda di tiap-tiap daerah. Misal, biasanya di daerah pantai atau daerah To'ene, kacang beras yang digunakan tidak dikupas. Tetapi, untuk daerah pegunungan atau bukit (Maniamele) kacang beras yang digunakan biasanya dikupas. Perbedaan itu karena kacang beras yang akan digunakan sebagai bahan babae harus ditanam sebelum tiga bulan acara atau pesta diselenggarakan. Kacang ini juga harus ditanam secara khusus karena jarang sekali orang yang menjualnya dalam jumlah banyak.[2]
