Ayam hutan adalah nama umum bagi jenis-jenis ayam liar yang hidup di hutan. Ayam hutan merupakan leluhur dari ayam kampung.

Ayam-ayam ini dari segi bentuk tubuh dan perilakunya sangat serupa dengan ayam-ayam peliharaan, karena memang merupakan leluhur dari ayam peliharaan. Jantan dengan betina berbeda bentuk tubuh, warna dan ukurannya (dimorfisme seksual, sexual dimorphism). Ayam hutan jantan memiliki bulu yang berwarna-warni dan indah, berbeda dengan ayam betinanya yang cenderung berwarna monoton dan kusam. Ukuran tubuh ayam hutan cenderung lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan ayam lainnya, gerakannya juga relatif lebih cepat dibanding ayam pada umumnya, hal ini dikarenakan sifat ayam hutan yang masih asli sesuai dengan kondisi sekitarnya yang liar.

Ragam jenis dan Penyebaran

Seluruhnya, ada empat spesies ayam hutan yang masih ada. Keempat spesies tersebut menyebar mulai dari India, Sri Lanka sampai ke Asia Tenggara termasuk Kepulauan Nusantara. Keempat spesies itu adalah:

Dua jenisnya terdapat di Indonesia, menyebar alami terutama di bahagian barat kepulauan. Kedua jenis itu ialah ayam-hutan merah, yang menyukai bahagian hutan yang relatif tertutup; dan ayam-hutan hijau, yang lebih menyenangi hutan-hutan terbuka dan wilayah berbukit-bukit.

Ayam hutan merah adalah moyang dari ayam peliharaan, sedangkan keturunan filius 1 dari persilangan antara ayam kampung dan ayam hutan hijau menghasilkan ayam bekisar.

Kebiasaan

Ayam hutan adalah pemakan segala, meskipun cenderung sebagai pemakan biji-bijian. Namun sebagaimana ayam umumnya, ayam hutan juga memakan pucuk-pucuk rumput, serangga dan berbagai hewan kecil yang ditemuinya.

Burung ini biasanya hidup berpasangan atau dalam kelompok kecil. Tidur di atas ranting perdu atau pohon, tidak terlalu jauh dari atas tanah. Pada musim bertelur, betina membuat sarang sederhana di atas tanah dan mengerami telurnya hingga menetas. Anak-anak ayam hutan diasuh oleh induk betinanya.

Tidak seperti ayam peliharaan, ayam hutan pandai terbang; tidak lama setelah meninggalkan sarang tempatnya menetas.

Domestikasi

Ayam hutan merupakan salah satu jenis unggas yang telah didomestikasi manusia sejak ribuan tahun yang lalu. Ayam hutan merah diketahui sebagai nenek-moyang langsung dari aneka jenis ayam peliharaan.
