Muslim abad pertengahan memegang peminatan mendalam terhadap pembelajaran surgawi: sebagian karena mereka menganggap tubuh-tubuh angkasa merupakan keilahian, sebagian karena para pengembara kawasan gurun sering berpergian saat malam, dan menjawab pengetahuan rasi bintang untuk pemanduan perjalanan mereka.[1][2] Setelah kebangkitan Islam, Muslim perlu menentukan waktu salat, arah Ka'bah, dan orientasi sebenarnya dari masjid, semuanya membantu memberikan dorongan keagamaan untuk mempelajari astronomi dan berkontribusi terhadap keyakinan bahwa tubuh-tubuh surgawi berpengaruh terhadap urusan duniawi serta kondisi manusia.[1] Ilmu yang berkaitan dengan pengaruh semacam itu disebut astrologi (bahasa Arab: علم النجوم Ilm an-Nujūm), sebuah pelajaran yang terdiri dari bidang astronomi (lebih dikenal sebagai علم الفلك Ilm al-Falak 'ilmu pembentukan [surgawi]').[1] Prinsip-prinsip dari pembelajaran tersebut berakar dari tradisi Arabia, Persia, Babilonia, Helenistik dan India dan keduanya sama-sama dikembangkan oleh bangsa Arab setelah mereka mendirikan observatorium megah dan perpustakaan teks-teks astronomi dan astrologi di Baghdad pada abad ke-8.
Sepanjang abad pertengahan, penerapan praktik astrologi menjadi bahan perdebatan filsafat mendalam pada kalangan cendekiawan keagamaan dan ilmuwan Muslim.
