Aras (bahasa Inggris: Cedar) adalah tumbuhan konifer dari genus Cedrus, famili Pinaceae. Tanaman ini menghasilkan kayu yang kuat, harum, dan tahan lama.[1] Tumbuhan ini merupakan tumbuhan asli pegunungan Himalaya sampai Mediterania dan tumbuh dengan baik di ketinggian 1500 m sampai 3200 m di kawasan Himalaya, dan 1000 m sampai 2200 m di Mediterania.[2]

Sejarah

Istilah cedrus merupakan turunan dari bahasa Yunani κέδρος kédros. Istilah kédros juga digunakan dalam bahasa latin. Kemungkinan istilah kédros pertama kali bukan digunakan khusus untuk menyebut pohon ini, tetapi juga termasuk pohon juniperus (juniper) yang memiliki karakteristik sama, yaitu batangnya memiliki aroma yang khas.[3] Istilah citron dan citrus (pohon jeruk) juga berasal dari istilah cedrus.[4] Transformasinya menjadi cedar dimulai sekitar tahun 1700-an meski berbagai otoritas seperti American Joint Committee on Horticultural Nomenclature tidak menyukainya dan tetap menggunakan cedrus sebagai standar.[5]

Deskripsi

Aras dapat tumbuh hingga ketinggian 60 m. Kayunya memiliki aroma yang khas karena kaya akan resin, dengan motif kayu yang juga khas. Daunnya meruncing menyerupai jarum dan tetap hijau sepanjang tahun. Susunan daunnya spiral di sekitar ranting. Setiap spesies memiliki lapisan lilin di daunnya dengan ketebalan yang bervariasi yang menentukan warna daun. Strobilusnya berbentuk barrel dengan panjang hingga 12 cm dan diameter hingga 8 cm. Biji dari strobilusnya mengandung resin yang berbau tidak sedap, kemungkinan untuk mencegahnya dimakan oleh tupai.[2][6]

Pemanfaatan

Aras merupakan tumbuhan yang mampu bertahan dalam kondisi dingin. Di habitat aslinya, aras hanya menerima presipitasi dari salju, sedangkan pada musim panas tidak ada presipitasi sedikitpun. Namun di Himalaya, aras menerima presipitasi dari hujan dan tidak menerima salju.[2] Sifatnya yang demikian menjadikan aras tahan terhadap cuaca dingin dan hujan. Aras dapat menjadi tanaman hias di kawasan beriklim dingin karena tahan terhadap cuaca bertemperatur minus 25 derajat Celcius.[7]

Kayu aras mengandung resin yang dapat menangkal serangan ngengat serta dapat menyerap kelembaban dan bau, sehingga aras terkenal sebagai bahan baku kayu untuk pembuatan lemari pakaian dan sepatu kayu.[8]
