Anna Freud (1895-1982) adalah seorang psikolog dari aliran psikoanalisis, yang juga merupakan putri dari Sigmund Freud.[1] Anna Freud terkenal karena bukunya yang berjudul "Ego dan Mekanisme Pertahanan" (Ego and Defense Mechanism).[1] Di dalam buku tersebut, Anna secara khusus membicarakan mekanisme pertahanan diri yang dilakukan oleh remaja.[1]

Perbedaan antara Anna dengan psikolog psikoanalisis lain seperti Jung dan Adler adalah Anna lebih tertarik dengan dinamika kejiwaan ketimbang struktur kejiwaan, khususnya dinamika yang bertumpu pada ego.[1] Bagi Anna, ego adalah dasar dari segala pengamatan seorang psikolog.[1] Di dalam ego, psikolog dapat mengamati cara kerja id, super ego, dan alam bawah sadar secara umum.[1] Dengan difokuskannya penelitian pada ego, dimulailah suatu gerakan di dalam Mazhab Psikoanalisis yang disebut psikologi ego.[1][2] Selain Anna Freud, Erik Erikson adalah seorang psikolog ego yang sangat terkenal.[1]

Kehidupan dan karier

Anna Freud lahir di Vienna, pada 3 Desember 1895.[3] Dia merupakan anak bungsu dari Freud dan Martha Bernays. Dia tumbuh dalam lingkungan nyaman dan kaya raya.[3] Anna Freud terlihat memiliki masa kanak-kanak yang kurang bahagia. Di mana dia tidak pernah memiliki hubungan yang bahagia dengan ibunya, oleh sebab itu dia diasuh oleh Josepine perawat katholik mereka.[3] Dia memiliki kesulitan dalam berinteraksi dengan saudaranya, khususnya dengan saudaranya yang bernama Sophie Freud. Sophie, adalah seorang anak yang atraktif, merepresentasikan sebagai sebuah ancaman baginya dalam mendapatkan perhatian ayahnya: "Kedua Freud muda tumbuh sebagaimana versi mereka sebagaimana dua versi persaudaraan: 'kecantikan' dan 'otak',[3] dan suatu ketika ayah mereka bicara tentang kecemburuan Anna terhadap Sophie.[3]
