Ang Mo Kio adalah pusat kota baru yang berlokasi di daerah utara tengah Singapura, dan dalam Wilayah Utara-Timur. Memiliki beberapa fasilitas umum di negara pulau itu, misalnya pusat jajanan, pasar tradisional dan blok perumahan HDB. Perdana Menteri Singapura, Lee Hsien Loong adalah Anggota Parlemen untuk daerah pemilihan ini.

Asal Usul Nama

Nama daerah ini dipercaya berasal dari frasa Hokkien Ang Mo Kio (Templat:Script/Chinese alias 番茄), yang berarti tomat. Ang mo (secara harfiah artinya rambut merah) adalah sebuah istilah Hokkien yang agak menghina kepada orang-orang dengan berambut pirang yang berasal dari Eropa. Karena nama itu mungkin dianggap kurang baik, sekarang ditulis sebagai 桥 宏茂 yang diucapkan dengan cara yang hampir sama tetapi berbeda arti yaitu Jembatan Pengembangan dan Kesejahteraan. Beberapa penduduk setempat telah salah mengasumsikan sebagai jembatan di kilometer tujuh dari Thomson Road (di persimpangan Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 dan Thomson Road). Kedua jembatan lama ini dikenal sebagai Or-kio (乌 桥) (jembatan hitam) dalam dialek lokal. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jembatan ini tidak secara resmi pernah diberi nama itu, jembatan ini membentang di kanal dan Sungai Kallang tua yang membentuk jalur ke Waduk Peirce.

Sumber nama sebenarnya berasal dari penelitian peta lama dengan label lahan sebagai Mukim Ang Mo Kio (Mukim berarti "daerah" atau "kabupaten" dalam bahasa Melayu). Kata "Ang Mo" 红毛 mungkin sebenarnya tidak mengacu pada Barat. Sebaliknya itu merupakan gabungan dua frasa terpisah di Hokkien. Ang Mo Dan berarti rambutan 红毛丹, yang berwarna merah dan ditutupi rambut, yang banyak ditemukan di sekitar wilayah kampung lama. Kemungkinan akhiran kedua "kio" 桥 (jembatan dalam Hokkien) ditambahkan ke 红毛 awalan "Ang Mo" sebagai keterangan tambahan untuk menunjuk lokasi yang lebih tepat bahwa penduduk akan mengenali 桥 红毛. Ada banyak jembatan batu yang dibangun oleh penduduk kampung lama. Pertama kali muncul pada peta dilihat oleh para peneliti yang mengambil dua frasa dan dikombinasikan untuk membentuk "Mukim Ang Mo Kio" ("Kabupaten Ang Mo Kio"). Lokasi sebenarnya dari Ang Mo Kio New Town juga telah dikenal dengan nama lama Kou-teu kio, Istilah Hokkien untuk "Jembatan ke Sembilan".
