Andrew Young

Andrew Young nama penuh Andrew Jackson Young, Jr (lahir, 12 Maret 1932 di New Orleans, Los Angles, Amerika Serikat) adalah politisi Amerika, pemimpin hak-hak sipil, dan pendeta.^[1]

Young dibesarkan di sebuah keluarga kulit hitam kelas menengah, Ia menempuh pendidikannya di segregated Southern schools, dan kemudian memasuki Howard University (Washington, DC) sebagai mahasiswa kedokteran.^[1] Tapi Young keluar dan pindah sekolah pelayanan dan lulus pada tahun 1955 dari Hartford Theological Seminary (Hartford, Connecticut) dengan gelar keilahian.^[1] Ia berasal dari keluarga kelas menengah, ayahnya adalah seorang dokter gigi, ibunya seorang guru.^[2] Setelah menjadi pendeta di beberapa gereja kulit hitam di Selatan, Young menjadi aktif dalam gerakan-terutama hak-hak sipil di registrasi pemilih drive.^[1]

Young menulis tentang perannya dalam memperjuangkan hak-hak sipil dalam dua buku: A Way Out of No Way (1994) dan An Easy Burden: The Civil Rights Movement and the Transformation of America (1996).^[2] Ia juga menulis dalam Walk in My Shoes: Conversations Between a Civil Rights Legend and His Godson on the Journey Ahead (2010).^[2] Ia terus berjuang untuk kesetaraan dan keadilan ekonomi dengan sebuah perusahaan konsultan, Good Works International, yang mendukung inisiatif pembangunan, khususnya di Afrika dan Karibia.^[2] Sebagai seorang aktivis hak-hak sipil yang terhormat, Young telah menerima penghargaan yang meliputi Presidential Medal of Freedom dan Asosiasi Nasional untuk Kemajuan Orang Kulit Berwarna Springarn Medal.^[2]
