Alfred Kastler (3 Mei 1902 – 7 Januari 1984) adalah fisikawan Prancis keturunan Jerman yang memenangkan Penghargaan Nobel dalam Fisika 1966.

Kastler menuntut ilmu di Lycée Bartholdi di Colmar, Alsace, kemudian ke École Normale Supérieure Paris tahun 1921. Selesai belajar pada tahun 1926, ia mulai mengajar fisika di Lycée Mulhouse, lalu di Universitas Bordeaux, di mana ia menjadi profesor universitas hingga 1941. Georges Bruhat memintanya kembali ke École Normale Supérieure, di mana akhirnya ia menduduki jabatan pada tahun 1952.

Dengan berkolaborasi bersama Jean Brossel, ia meneliti mekanika kuantum, interaksi antara cahaya dan atom, serta spektroskopi. Kastler, bekerja pada gabungan resonansi optik dan resonansi magnetik, mengembangkan teknik "pompa optik". Karya-karya itu melengkap teori laser dan maser.

Ia memenangkan Penghargaan Nobel dalam Fisika tahun 1966 "untuk penemuan dan pengembangan metode optik untuk mempelajari resonansi Hertz pada atom".

Ia adalah pimpinan dewan Institut d'optique théorique et appliquée.

Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel

Profesor Kastler menghabiskan sebagian besar karier penelitiannya di École Normale Supérieure, Paris di mana ia memulai kelompok riset kecil spektroskopi bersama mahasiswanya, Jean Brossel setelah perang.

Lebih dari 40 tahun berikutnya, kelompok ini telah melatih banyak fisikawan muda dan berdampak pada pengembangan ilmu fisika atom di Prancis.
