Albert Roussel

Albert Charles Paul Marie Roussel (Prancis: [albɛ ː ʁ ʁusɛl], 5 April 1869 - 23 Agustus 1937) adalah seorang komponis asal Prancis.[1] Ia menghabiskan tujuh tahun hidupnya sebagai kadet, lalu beralih ke musik, dan menjadi salah satu komponis paling menonjol di Prancis.[1] Karya-karya awalnya sangat dipengaruhi oleh impresionisme dari Debussy dan Ravel, tetapi ia kemudian berbalik ke arah neoklasik.[1]

Lahir di Tourcoing ( Nordik ), Roussel awalnya sama sekali tidak meminati dunia musik, tetapi matematika.[1] Dia menghabiskan waktu di Angkatan Laut Prancis, dan pada tahun 1889 dan 1890 ia menjabat sebagai awakkapal Iphigénie dan menghabiskan beberapa tahun di Cochinchina. Perjalanan ini mempengaruhi jiwa artistik dalam dirinya.[2] Setelah mengundurkan diri dari Angkatan Laut pada tahun 1894, ia mulai belajar harmoni di Roubaix, pertama berguru dengan Julien Koszul (kakek dari komposer Henri Dutilleux), yang mendorong dia untuk mengejar formasi di Paris dengan Eugène Gigout, kemudian melanjutkan studinya sampai 1908 di Schola Cantorum de Paris di mana salah seorang gurunya adalah Vincent d'Indy.[2] Selagi belajar, ia juga mengajar, dan murid-muridnya adalah Erik Satie dan Edgard Varese.[2]
