Aktor karakter

Aktor karakter adalah seorang aktor pendukung yang memerankan karakter yang menarik, tidak biasa, dan eksentrik,^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4] atau aktor yang dapat membawakan peran berbeda dengan dirinya dan berhasil melakukannya dengan baik.^[5] Istilah ini sangat kontras dengan aktor utama, agak abstrak dan terbuka untuk diinterpretasikan.^[6] Dalam arti harfiah, semua aktor dapat dianggap sebagai aktor karakter karena mereka semua memainkan "karakter",^[7] tetapi dalam arti biasa, aktor karakter adalah aktor yang memainkan peran pendukung yang khas dan penting.^[8]^[9]

Aktor karakter dapat memainkan karakter yang sangat berbeda dari kepribadian kehidupan nyata aktor di luar layar, sementara dalam arti lain aktor karakter mungkin adalah orang yang berspesialisasi dalam peran kecil. Dalam kedua kasus, peran aktor karakter lebih substansial daripada pemeran kecil atau pemeran tambahan yang tidak berbicara. Aktor karakter juga bisa menjadi aktor utama dalam film mereka, seperti Wallace Beery, yang karier film bisu utamanya meledak selama era film suara.

Istilah ini digunakan terutama untuk menggambarkan aktor televisi dan film.^[10] Penggunaan awal istilah ini adalah dalam majalah The Stage edisi 1883, yang mendefinisikan aktor karakter sebagai "orang yang menggambarkan individualitas dan eksentrisitas".^[11] Aktor dengan sejarah karier yang panjang memainkan peran karakter mungkin sulit dikenali oleh penonton sebagai aktor yang sama.^[4]
