Akson atau neurit adalah sel yang panjang, tipis dan membawa impuls elektrikal menjauh dari sel tubuh neuron atau soma.[1] Akson ini juga dilindungi oleh selubung mielin.
Fungsi akson adalah untuk mengirim informasi ke bermacam neuron, otot dan kelenjar.
Akson adalah jalur transmisi utama sistem saraf dan mereka membantu membuat saraf. Akson individual berukuran sekitar 1 mikrometer (μm).
Akson terpanjang pada tubuh manusia adalah saraf skiatik yang menjalankan dari basis tulang belakang ke jari besar tiap kaki. Saraf skiatik ini dapat terbentang sekitar satu meter atau lebih panjang.
