Abugida

Perbandingan dari berbagai turunan aksara Brahmi.

Abugida (Ge'ez አቡጊዳ ’äbugida), atau disebut juga alfasilabis, adalah aksara segmental yang didasarkan pada konsonan dengan notasi vokal yang diwajibkan tetapi bersifat sekunder. Hal ini berbeda dengan alfabet yang vokalnya memiliki status sama dengan konsonan serta abjad yang penandaan vokalnya tidak ada atau manasuka (opsional). Keluarga aksara Brahmi yang banyak digunakan di Asia Selatan dan Asia Tenggara termasuk dalam jenis aksara abugida.[1]

Istilah abugida diusulkan oleh Peter T. Daniels (1990) dan merupakan nama Ethiopia (yang khusus) untuk aksara Ge'ez.[2] Sedangkan istilah alfasilabis (bahasa Inggris: alphasyllabary) diusulkan oleh William Bright (1997).[3] Istilah lain yang juga pernah diusulkan adalah neosilabis (Février 1959), pseudoalfabet (Householder 1959), semisilabis (Diringer 1968; istilah yang juga memiliki makna lain), serta alfabet silabis (Coulmas 1996; yang juga merupakan sinonim dari aksara silabis).
