Abdullah Öcalan (lahir 4 April 1948) adalah seorang ahli teori politik sayap kiri Kurdi, tahanan politik dan salah satu anggota pendiri Partai Pekerja Kurdistan (PKK) militan.[1][2]

Öcalan ditangkap pada tahun 1999 oleh Badan Intelijen Nasional Turki (MIT) dengan dukungan CIA di Nairobi dan dibawa ke Turki, di mana ia dijatuhi hukuman mati berdasarkan Pasal 125 KUHP Turki, yang menyangkut pembentukan organisasi bersenjata.[3][4][5][6]

Hukuman itu diringankan menjadi hukuman penjara seumur hidup ketika Turki menghapuskan hukuman mati untuk mendukung upayanya untuk diterima sebagai anggota di Uni Eropa. Dari 1999 hingga 2009, ia adalah satu-satunya tahanan[7] di pulau İmralı, di Laut Marmara. Öcalan sekarang berpendapat bahwa periode perang bersenjata sudah lewat dan solusi politik untuk pertanyaan Kurdi harus dikembangkan. Konflik Kurdi-Turki telah mengakibatkan lebih dari 40.000 kematian, yang sebagian besar adalah warga sipil Kurdi.
